Jim Hull

Captain Jim Hull, a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain, guides on the waters of Montauk and Shelter Island. Jim is filled with knowledge that only comes from years of on-the-water experience. Many club members have booked trips with Jim, becauce he approaches fly fishing Montauk with a unique perspective, that time and time again proves he knows how to catch big stripers in Montuak ing Montauk.

Captain Brendan McCarthy

Brendan has been flyfishing in NYC since he came here 1990, and founded Urban Fly Guides in 1998. He fishes Jaimaca Bay and the surrounding waters in the spring and heads out to Montauk for the fall run. Brendan has been featured in ESPN's Guide House and fly fishing magazines such as Fly Fisherman, Fly Fishing in Saltwater and Saltwater Flyfisherman. He will let us in on his secrets of Jamaica Bay and how to catch big stripers close to home.

Tom Gilmore

Besides being the first president and founding member of Coastal Flyrodders,Tom Gilmore has been president of the New Jersey Audubon Society, the oldest and largest conservation organization in the state of New Jersey, for the past 25 years. In that time, he has led the conservation community through numerous extraordinary environmental achievements In addition to being an accomplished environmentalist, Tom is an avid fly fisherman. His first book, False Albacore, was published in 2002, and he recently completed his second book entitled, Tuna on the Fly, which was published in the fall of 2006. Currently he is working on his third book which will be a multi-state trout stream guide. He will be letting us in on his secrets to catching the poor mans tarpon - Shad, on a fly. Tom is alway as fun to listen to as he is informative, so be sure not to miss this one.



Captain Steve Tiffinger

Captain Steve Tiffinger has been fly fishing extensively for more than 35 years. He is a fully qualified instructor who places emphasis on fun and learning for every trip. On-A-Fly Charters specializes in fly and light tackle fishing, primarily in shallow water along the coast off Norwalk and Westport, Connecticut. Captain Steve fishes the extensive flats, rips and structure of the Norwalk Islands to the Long Island shoreline from the Port of Norwalk, Connecticut and he will being sharing his knowledge with us. Steve holds a Coast Guard Masters license and is an IGFA certified Captain. A member of the Ranger Pro Staff, he fishes a 223 Cayman flats skiff. This is northeast shallow water fishing at its finest.

Last August, Captain Bill Sheehan The Hackensack River Keeper saw something he never thought he’d ever see on the banks of the Hackensack. I had just witnessed a fishing guide being paid for taking someone fishing on the Hackensack River.” and thought “New guide service a sure sign of the river’s continuing recovery.” Jay Angrick, proprietor of Good Time Guide Service reports that his striper business is booming and that he doesn’t have to travel far to find either trophy-sized bass or large schools of smaller – and legal – fish for his clients. Often they simply motor down to the Bayonne Flats in Newark Bay, the Oyster Flats south of Liberty Island or any one of several tributaries of the Hackensack River.

Dave Colley

Dave Colley’s fishing career started in 1993 as the Northeastern U.S. representative for Dan Bailey’s Fly shop. After two years on the road he managed Fishing Creek Outfitters, a fly shop in Benton, PA. Colley had the opportunity to introduce hundreds of new anglers to the sport, both men and women. He accepted a sales position with Cortland Line Company in 1999 and now represents the St. Croix Rod Company. He has a strong interest in teaching new anglers. Colley spends the month of May on the water guiding clients on Spruce Creek for Spruce Creek Outfitters. This is his favorite time of the year. Learning to cast a fly and presenting it to a rising fish is one of the most exciting activities there is. There are many aspects to fly fishing and the most important are patients and practice. In the casting clinic, Dave will teach us the skills necessary to become more proficient casters.



Ken Lagerveld & Annual BBQ

Ken Lagerveld has been fly fishing for 30 plus years, freshwater bass, saltwater, mostly in NJ, PA, MI and the Catskills and saltwater, in the Forida Keys and northeast. Ken has been a rep in the fly fishing business for 10 years, including Scott Fly Rod, Abel, Patagonia, Rajeff Sports ( Airflo and Echo Rods), Chota Outdoor, Pacific Fly, and Dr Slick. He'll let us know whats new and have fun trying all this stuff out. Nothing like burgers and fly casting on a summer night.

From rigging kayaks to rigging korkers with zip ties, we all share tricks we have learned to make fly fishing a better experience. We will show members how to rig a line for tuna and how to use braid to make a seamless connection to your fly line. We'll throw together some stripping baskets, and tie some new flies. It sure to be a fun night out.

Tying flies since the age of fourteen on a “homemade rotary vise”, Steve has ventured into all forms of the fly-tying art. He regularly appeares at various tying forums, local, regional, & international, and demonstrates his craft at various fly shops along the east coast. His Polar Pony flies are featured in the 2008 winter issue of Fly Tyer Magazine and two of his patterns have been included in a new release, “Passion for Pike”, by his friend Ad Swier, a well known Pike fisherman, artist, author, and founder of the Dutch Fly Fair. Currently, Steve is a member of Regal Vise Company’s developmental team and has cooperated in the design of their new in-line rotary model, the Revolution. He is also a pro staff tier for Regal & Mustad-Partridge USA.

As we explore and find new spots we all share our experiences and knowledge so all our members have the opportunity to catch big stripers on a fly.
